The Challenge…

I reckon I could eat a supersized McDonalds meal (the kind with huge portion of chips/fried and a litre of coke).

Rob doesn’t think I could.

So the challenge is for me to eat a supersized Macca’s meal somewhere in America. If I win, I get $50. If I lose, Rob gets $50.

As with all challenges, there has to be some ground rules.
1. I can choose when and where I take up the challenge
2. I have to finish the meal in one sitting (which we have said will be within 45 minutes).
3. There can’t be any food revisiting my mouth after being swallowed… eww.

Wish me luck – hopefully there is no graphic aftermath. I will be sure to post the results on this blog, as long as it isn’t too embarrassing.

T-minus 3 weeks

Things are getting closer and closer – and there’s more and more organising to be done.

Rob and I have been busy buying suitcases and a bunch of travel type stuff (eye masks, neck pillow, travel hairdryer, money belt etc). And it’s all adding up!

We are also looking at what is the best way to deal with money overseas. There is the Travelex Cash Passport and the ANZ Travel Card. I reckon the ANZ one looks the best. You BPAY money into your account and you can use it for ATM withdrawals (US$2.20 fee each time) and on EFTPOS (free). So it’s all much cheaper than a normal bank account which charges something like $5 per ATM withdrawal – no thanks! There’s also no money stored on the card, so if we lose it (or get mugged) we wont be losing any money.

We also have to work out what to do with mobile phones overseas. We will turn on our international roaming – but that is hella expensive for when people call/msg us. So we will probably end up getting a pre-paid sim card with some American company and using that. I am sure we will post our number up here when we get it (maybe we will even get a new iphone to go with that… 🙂 )

Anyways, this has been a boring post – I shouldnt have started this blog a month before fly-out – running out of things to say…

The Plan – Part 2

I am sure you’re all wondering in great anticipation about some more details on our plan. So here is a slightly more detailed description:Yes.. this is the view they have

We leave wintery Perth on 10th July and then head to Sydney for 3 days. We will be staying with some friends there (*thumbs up* to Carita and Nicki) who have a particularly awesome apartment in North Sydney which overlooks the harbour bridge…seriously. Carita is taking a day off to go exploring with us – really looking forward to catching up with her.

From Sydney, we go on a wonderful 13 hour flight to San Francisco thanks to Qantas Airlines. We chose not to go to L.A. because apparently the airport there is crap. Also, I watch The Hills so I have seen enough of L.A. anyway 🙂

So we will be spending 10 days in San Fran and have already booked at the Adelaide Hostel (which seems to have some good reviews). We plan to do Alcatraz, Golden Gate bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown etc. Should be a blast.

From there, we will be heading across to the gambling capital of the world – Las Vegas. We will probably stay there for about 5 days or so. We haven’t booked anywhere yet but with the dwindling US dollar the hotels are pretty cheap. We are thinking the Luxor or Bill’s Gamblin’ Saloon. Ofcourse, we will also try to take a wander up to the Grand Canyon too.

After that, our plans get a little… vague. Rob’s uncle is down in Kerrville (just outside San Antonio) in Texas. So will probably fly there and stay 2-3 weeks exploring Texas.

We definitely want to go to New Orleans, Florida (Disney World yay!), Chicago and New York. Rob also has some family in Chicago so will be good to spend some time with them. They have already promised to take us to a Cubs game (that’s a baseball team by the way).

We are hoping to hire/scab a car somehow – we reckon that would be the best way to get around from San Antonio onwards. Have to see what happens.

After exploring the east coast, we will be making our way back in San Fran so that we can catch our flight to Tokyo on 8th October.

Rob has a mate who used to live in Japan and who will be there in October. We will be getting a Japan Rail Pass which has been highly recommended to help us get around a little easier. We plan to spend a day or two in Tokyo  to get over some jet lag – then catch the train to Osaka and stay there for ~10 days (doing day trips to various nearby cities and towns). Then we go back up to Tokyo for ~10 days and do much the same thing. Really looking forward to Japan – although I am also a bit hesitant as I hate… crowds :S

And we arrive back in Perth on 30th October.

So there you have it – the plan!

Sayoonara,

The Plan…

Hi interested reader..

Rob and I will be embarking on a bit of an adventure in about 4 weeks time. We will be spending 3 months in the USA and then 3 weeks in Japan.

We haven’t travelled overseas together before so we are very excited.. and a little nervous!

I plan to upload photos and keep a bit of a blog about our adventures – so be sure to stay tuned. Our fly-out date is 10th July – so we might start with some going-away party photos first.

Over and out.
